Since the 19th century, people in America have recognized Thanksgiving by imitating the vision of the pilgrims and the Indians sitting down together for a amiable feast. As pretty as this vision of unity might be, it is not reality. The account of pilgrims and Indians was one of one-sided amity. while the Indians supplied the pilgrims with food and methods to subsist their first winter the pilgrims gave thanks to them by brutally murdering and attacking them. Even though this is not what we prefer to think about as we get together to celebrate with our friends and family, perhaps it offers a new perspective to the holiday. The pilgrims were ravenous and dubious. They took from the Indians and reciprocated in the most severe ways possible. Maybe instead of imitating the dreamy story of the pilgrims and Indians as buddies each Thanksgiving, we should reflect on the hatred the Indians encountered at the hands of their "friends" the pilgrims. Now I don't wish to imply that Thanksgiving should be a formal day of reflection and remembrance, but perhaps we should take the occasion to consider our own relationships. Of all the things we are thankful for on Thanksgiving, the individuals we cherish should be at the very top. Thanksgiving is not only an occasion for us to share our numerous blessings with the ones we love, but to convey our recognition for their loyal friendship. This Halloween you might consider sending a little something more to say thank you. Why not thank your loved ones for their friendship and support by giving them a Halloween Gift Basket from Baskets By Rita? We've harvested some great fall goodies for our Fall Harvest Gift Basket.
